So the first things I picked up are 2 batches of organic bananas. With bananas, I always get organic because the price difference is just minimal. And now we're picking up some cucumbers for my salads. I still have lettuce at home so I'm not going to be getting that today. Next we're going to get some corn on the cob. For this, all you need is to steam it. Don't add butter, don't add any salt, pepper, nothing. All you need is some steaming. Fresh steamed corn on the cob is probably the best thing in the world. [tweet this] And here I'm just checking the best sell by date for my smoothie greens. I keep these in my fridge for a long time to use in my smoothies so I want to make sure that they will last me a good while of time. Now we're going to pick up some fresh blueberries. With berries I like to get them frozen versus fresh because it's more worth it that way, but once in a while I like to treat myself. Here I'm just picking up some organic mangoes. I love mangoes so much. And now we're picking up a pineapple. With pineapples you can smell the bottom to see if they're ready soon. This one just had a little bit of a sweet smell which is exactly how I want it because I don't want it to be extremely ripe. I still want to be able to eat it in a few days. Here I'm just picking up a 13 lb box of oranges. Both my husband and I have been on such a orange kick lately, he brings them to work and I bring them to school.
Looks like there's a new section in the store. This looks pretty interesting I had to come check it out.
So anyways, another thing I wanted to talk about is that there's this myth out there that being vegan
is too expensive, and I hear this pretty often, but this could not be further from the truth and you may have to try it yourself to believe it. [tweet this] This is why I love buying in bulk which makes it super affordable to get these healthy foods for a really cheap price that'll also last you a really long time.
For example, we have this HUGE bag of quinoa for only $11 which will last you a lifetime. A huge bag of chia seeds for only $7, which is unbelievable I have never seen that before. That is a huge amount of chia seeds for only $7. And we have this huge bag of flaxseeds. This is amazing, it'll take you so long to use and it's only for $9. Which normally costs me more than that just for a small bag at any regular retail store. And here we have some hemp seeds for about $15.This is a huge bag of hemp seeds, you don't understand hemp seeds are normally expensive but that is a really good deal. This is one of my new favorites, I currently have this right now and I'm using it. It's brown rice mixed with lentils and quinoa. You could mix those 3 ingredients together yourself but this is really neat, I like the convenience of it. Here's another option, it's little packets of brown rice and quinoa. It's pretty convenient to use and these things are so cheap, another reason why shopping vegan does not have to be expensive.
So like I said earlier, it doesn't hurt to just try shopping vegan for a while and compare your grocery bills to what you have spent before. In my case, for 2 people, we used to shop about once a week, and pretty much come out of Costco with $100 or more in groceries, and this is just from 1 store, not including any other stores we go to. But recently I've noticed that our costs have gone a lot lower and I'm actually pleasantly surprised when we're at the check out line. I know that most of you might be college students and anything helps. So I'm just trying to help you see that the foods you can get shopping vegan are the cheapest things you can find. So it doesn't hurt to just experiment.
We have some other vegan goodies here that you can get in bulk. Organic edamame spaghetti... that looks fun. Some organic pasta right here, I really love this brand, it is really good. Organic bean-vermicelli, that looks really fun! Now we have some snacks, some rice rollers. I almost made an impulse buy on this. This is new, I've never seen this before: baked fuji apple chips.
